Established in 1955, Bob Taylor’s Ranch House is widely accepted as the oldest operating restaurant in Las Vegas. Original owner Bob Taylor would barbecue for his friends and neighbors in the middle of nowhere off the Tonopah Highway (now U.S. 95). When word got out and demand for his barbecue grew, he turned his ranch house into a supper club. On Saturdays and Sundays he would host trap-shooting competitions, where shooters from all over the world would come to win trophies and prizes like silver belt buckles, then settle in for a hearty meat-centric meal. My prime rib was cooked on point, with just the right amount of light smokiness to enhance the tender meat, and my creamy, twice-baked potato was stuffed with bacon and garlic.

Hearty Food in a Friendly Atmosphere
The main floor includes a spacious living room with a wood-beam ceiling and wood-burning fireplace that opens to a sitting room and dining room, all with direct access to the outdoor pool and terrace. Its current owner, Janie Shiffman, said the master bedroom is large enough to roller skate in. The interior resembles the house on the Ponderosa Ranch of the television series “Bonanza,” with hand-hewn wooden beams, she said. One day in 1939, Mulholland was riding a horse in the hills of Porter Ranch, north of Devonshire Street, when she saw Gary Cooper on a bluff, riding alone. Cooper didn’t live in the Valley but rode horses on its trails, she said. “No one came here for fashion or splash,” said Mulholland, 62, who grew up on a ranch on Corbin Avenue in Northridge.

Yet, with clever landscaping, the Ranch House still manages to seem “out in the country.” We breathed a little easier as we pulled into the gravel lot and traversed the tree-lined walk into the restaurant. Since 1955, our Western-themed restaurant has been serving sizzling steaks to legions of fans who want a get-away-from-it-all experience. Western memorabilia including John Wayne posters, saddles, and a decorative collection of spurs owned by a number of Hollywood cowboys covers the walls of the large cocktail lounge and bar. For the best houses for sale, places to eat, wine to drink, things to do, and untold histories of Los Angeles's brightest stars and their Hollywood homes. By allowing Opie into her home, Elizabeth allowed adoring fans access to parts of her life that up to that point had been off-limits to everyone outside her friends and family.

Feb. 9 and 10 at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Besides the restaurant itself, the Ranch House boasts a sports bar to the left of the main entrance. The bar and restaurant area are separated such that they almost feel like two separate establishments. Pennsylvania transplants will appreciate the regular showing of Pittsburgh Steelers games, and anyone looking for a good steak with their sports should find themselves happy here.

“A few love it the way it is,” said Marcie Hartley, also with Hilton & Hyland. “Others want to tear it down and start over.” A few, she said, view the eight parcels as ripe for subdivision and development. LVMS will be the first track in history to host two NASCAR tripleheader weekends in the same year. Race fans can already lock in their tickets to both LVMS tripleheaders and capitalize on discounted prices for buying annual passes for all six NASCAR races.
Opened in 1955, Bob Taylor’s Original Ranch House is the oldest steakhouse in Las Vegas. Situated in the suburban northwest, the restaurant still feels “out in the country,” and diners will find a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy excellently-prepared grilled meats. Customers may dine in the Western-themed main dining room or the sports bar.
Fun things to do in NYC this weekend, including the Big Apple’s newest bar openings.
Bob Taylor’s Ranch House is unapologetically a steakhouse. The carnivorous flair begins with the appetizers, all but one of which, the sautéed mushrooms, features meat. Smothered in a creamy, spicy Creole sauce, the dish contained four shrimp, a nice size given the vast scale of our dinners to come. The waitress offered us extra bread for dipping in the sauce before we even asked for it. The complimentary garlic cheese bread itself is a treat, warm and soft with a crunchy layer of cheese and spices.

Our server was prompt and friendly, offering good advice on the menu selections. Opie’s photographs present a rare and unfiltered glimpse into the life of one of the world’s most famous stars. Elizabeth also had pieces of art from van Gogh, Degas, Renoir and Pissarro. The first floor also includes a country kitchen, two powder rooms, one of which includes a sauna and shower for the pool, a screening room, a master suite, two bedrooms with garden access, and a maid’s quarters.

Bob Taylor’s Original Ranch House stands as a unique destination for Las Vegas locals and adventurous tourists. Opened in 1955, it is the city’s oldest steakhouse. Located just off Ann Road near I-95 in northwest Las Vegas, the Ranch House originally stood beyond the edges of suburban development, even as recently as ten years ago. Now, I-215 is visible to the north, a subdivision flanks the restaurant to the south, and strip malls light up the view to the west.
I just want to tell ya folks, the food and service couldn’t have been any better, and the place was filled to the rafters. I must warn you, the parking lot is a dirt lot (never was anything but dirt) and it has a touch of off-road in the parking section for extra parking. The barren desert and tumbleweeds that surrounded the Ranch House back then have now been enveloped by development, but the wood-paneled house covered in Western memorabilia still serves great mesquite-grilled meat. The parking lot is desert dirt, feral cats roam the surrounding property and white Christmas lights still trail the walkway up to the restaurant. Notable diners include Strip headliners like Siegfried and Roy, Mayors Oscar and Carolyn Goodman and members of the Rat Pack. After our seafood appetizer, we opted for house specialties for our entrees.
Roni’s lamb was coated with mustard and rosemary, classic flavor combinations, but what surprised me was how awesome the meat was. It was the best lamb I’ve ever had in Las Vegas, period. The Ranch House potatoes are basically hash browns, spuds mixed with cheese and mushrooms.
This reporter arrived in our Village in late 1965, and one of the first restaurants I took my family to, after Hank Greenspun—publisher of the Las Vegas Sun— suggested it to me was The Ranch. Taylor had started the ranch a lot earlier strictly as a fun thing to do for his friends, who would come out to his Gun club to shoot Skeet or Trap on the weekends. A few years back some restaurant writer friends from Los Angeles used to rave about an old-style steakhouse that was many miles away from the strip. My wife and I decided to give it a visit last month.
